Continuous glucose monitoring

Monitoring glucose levels have been a constant struggle for diabetes patients for quite some time. Pricking their fingers several times a day has been a big lifestyle issue for most people with diabetes specially during work and social setting. Today, we are fortunate to be in an era in which advancement in diabetes research has not only led to better understanding of diabetes, but new medications and technology like Continuous glucose monitors has made diabetes a much more manageable disease.

Apparently, CGM may seem like another tool to monitor glucose but when you talk to patients using cgm it is astonishing how much of a difference it is making in their lives. Being able to visualize their glucose numbers and trends makes a big difference in getting them more engaged in making the necessary behavioral changes and taking actions. CGM is now becoming the standard of care in Diabetes management. Multiple studies have shown improvement in HGA1C and hypoglycemic episodes with the use of continuous glucose monitors both in type 1 as well as type 2 diabetic patients who are on multiple dose insulin regime or have had frequent hypoglycemia or hypoglycemic unawareness.
